Motorheadache
regrets to advise that it has had to remove its online
demo tracks after negotiations with the Performing Rights
Society over licensing. It transpires that the PRS is
targeting a number of tribute bands and looking to invoice
them for up to £500 per year in royalties. It
is worth stating that the royalty payments recovered
go to the non-profit making PRS, in essence to cover
their administration costs and to fund their activities.
The payments do NOT go to the artists themselves, in
this case Motorhead.
Lemmy
himself once remarked that the music industry is full
of 'swivel eyed bastards' and it is hard not to pay
tribute to such a sentiment.
Motorheadache
has always made its demo tracks available to the general
public online without charge, but is now no longer in
a position to do so. Similarly, we have produced demo
CDs in the past for promoters free of charge, but must
refrain from doing so, unless we are prepared to pay
yet another fee to the PRS.
Other
tribute bands that produce CDs for sale at their gigs
might wish to reflect upon the licensing implications,
as they are currently coming under similar scrutiny.
